The New Multinationals: perspectives from Spain

The popular model of MNC's global expansion vertically and horizontally is well document. For horizontal expansion, technology and brands are considered pre-requisites. The raise of multinationals from developing nations like India puzzled many. In this book Mauro F. Guille´n and Esteban Garcı´a-Canal , develop a new theory of enablers for new MNCs. The examples were mostly Spanish but might be valid for Indian MNCs too.
The new multinationals from the BRIC countries have made great inroads into the global economy. Among Brazilian firms, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce and Metalu´rgica Gerdau are among the largest firms in mining and steel, Embraer holds with Bombardier of Canada a duopoly in the global regional jet market, and Natura Cosme´ticos has a presence in both Latin America and Europe. Lukoil, Gazprom, and Severstal are among the Russian multinationals, while India boasts an army of firms not only in IT and outsourcing services, in which companies such as Infosys, TCS, and Wipro are among the largest in the world, but also in steel, automobiles, and pharmaceuticals. Chinese firms have erupted with force in global markets not only as exporters but also as foreign investors, and in every industry from mining and oil to chemicals and steel. In electrical appliances and electronics, China boasts three increasingly well-known firms: Haier, Lenovo, and Huawei.
International expansion for new MNCs has become possible due to unique capabilities developed by them in their home country in less than perfect conditions. The process of resource accumulation is dependent on home country characteristics such as:
1. infrastructure gaps created opportunities leading to project execution capabilities- Bharati Telecom, GMR Airports, Adani shipyards.
2. Managing suffocating regulations and red tape became a source of competitive advantage as firms learn to leverage previliged political connection.- Reliance
3. Managing fragmented and relatively low capacities at home made the new MNCs masters in turning around under performing firms in foreign countries- Birla empire.
4. meeting unconventional needs at home developed expertise in specific niches carried to global niches- pharma generics, frugal innovations.
5. joint ventures and technology transfer arrangements upgraded engineering skills- Tata Motors.
6. working with Fortune 500 firms resulted in reputation- IT giants.

Indian technology licensee for Mosquito control left in the cold by regulatory authority

Rajagopalan in the current science narrates sorrowful state of technology transfer from Indian research institutes. The Vector Control Research Institute under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare developed bio-friendly Mosquito Control agent and with approval from WHO license the same. Now comes the shock- another agency under the same ministry , National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) rejects this product. Read: http://www.ias.ac.in/currsci/25mar2011/801a.pdf

How much it costs to develop a new drug?

What is the cost of developing a new drug ( new chemical entity/new molecular entity) ?
MNCs quote $1.32 billion and this is based on estimate of $802 million in 2000.
While not denying Drug discovery is expensive and long drawn, the estimates were always taken with disbelief.

Innoget Challenge: Ethernet Switch Hardware

COMPANY PROFILE
University research group focused in Advance Ethernet Switching actively developping and promoting layer two protocols for campus enterprise and data center networks
CHALLENGE DESCRIPTIONBasic mechanism of ARP Path protocol operates as follows:
A broadcast Ethernet frame arrives at a port of a bridge, where its source address SA, if unkown to the bridge, gets associated to that port and this association remains locked (can not change) for some short time (i.e. 10 milliseconds). Frames with same source address SA arriving to other ports (thus arriving via a port that is not associated to SA address) are discarded.
It must be implemented in hardware and, whenever possible, be applicable to large Ethernet switches with ports located at multiple line boards, taking into account that many frames arrive simultaneously to all ports of the bridge.

Probiotic Dahi for cardiovascular health, protection against cancer and improvement of immunity

License available from NDRI for this technology. Brief details:

Screened several strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum for probiotic attributes including their ability to survive acidity in stomach and bile salts in the intestine, adhere to mucosal cells in the large intestine, and possess good bile salt hydrolase and antibacterial activity. The technology of Acido-bifidus probiotic dahi was developed incorporating selected strains of these two probiotic bacteria alongwith dahi culture (Lactococcus lactis ssp. cremoris and Lactococcus lactis ssp diacetylactis).  The culture conditions were worked out for development of the product that has flavor, taste and texture similar to that of regular Dahi. The counts of each of the two probiotic bacteria in the product are in the range 2x10 7 to   2x108 cfu/gram. Health benefits of the product have been validated, and the results published in 8 peer reviewed international journals. Acido-bifidus dahi improves cardiovascular health by lowering serum cholesterol levels.  It protects against intestinal cancer by decreasing the activation of carcinogens and improving their detoxification, and modifying the expressions of oncogenes and apoptotic genes. Acido-bifidus dahi slows down the ageing process by improving immunity (macrophage and lymphocyte functions) and antioxidant status. The health benefits of lactobacilli are strain specific and Acido-Bifidus probiotic dahi is a superior product compared to similar product available in the market, since these products document no health-benefit claims.

Patent applied: A process for preparation of Acido-bifidus probiotic Dahi. (Dr. V.K.Kansal, Ms. Sonal Rajpal). Application No. 639/DEL/2007 dated 23/03/2007

Sponsored research made more attractive with increase in weighted deduction to 200 percent- does that matter?

The current budget proposed enhancement of weighted deduction on payments made to National and Institutes of technology for Scientific research to 200% from 175%. Will that induce industry to sponsor more R&D on labs and IITs?  Taking CSIR case, Sponsored Research from Industry is clubbed with other government projects and shown as ECF (External Cash Flows). In 1996 vision document, a target of 7 billion rupees by 2001 was taken. And by 2003-4, ECF raised to Rs 2.55 billion.
As per CAG report 2007  `to generate ECF, a modernization plan of Rs 250 crores was approved in IXth plan, Rs 263 crores were actually spent but instead of generating a net positive incremental ECF of Rs 361 crores, that year under review resulted in negative incremental ECF of Rs 15 crores.
Any industry insights why/ why not sponsor R&D projects on CSIR or IITs?

Kit for conversion of fossil fuel vehicles into Hybrid vehicles.

The Finance Minister said:
`In response to the growing demand for green ventures, a technology has been developed indigeneoulsy for the conversion of fossil fuel vehicles into Hybrid vehicles through the fitment of a kit. I propose to reduce the excise duty on such kits and their parts from 10% to 5%.'

Can anyone share information on the indigenous technology that caught the eye of Finance Minister?
