  Design challenge: How can air purification be designed in a way that enhances the quality of the different activities in our living environments and addresses specific needs?

Kitchen Tools 2011 International Design Competition:

Invent a new kitchen tool - a new vegetable peeler, a new pasta machine, a new meat tenderizing tool... whatever kitchen tool you can improve on, either by starting from scratch or by making a significant improvement to a tool that's already in use.

World Kitchen invites you to redefine the kitchen tools for preparing, cooking and serving food, making them more space-efficient, time sensitive and versatile for today’s home chef and their cooking needs. Whether your design helps a cook to shape pasta, marinate meats, create a stir fry, flip burgers, or dish out soup, think about the cultural heritage you want to reflect and define its modern reality as you identify and design your concept. 

When preparing your submission, World Kitchen would like you to consider:

• How could a tool suit your cultural heritage with the world’s new realities to improve the home chef’s experience?
• Are there new activities, needs and opportunities for efficiency and better quality to enhance the chef’s accomplishments?
• Can you make meal preparation and serving easier, faster, more affordable, and more space-efficient?
• Do we need new tools, even ones that serve more than one function, to increase versatility and value to the consumer?

Philips Electronics invites industrial designers to design better Ironing Steam generators

Steam generators consist of a conventional iron and a base. The iron is connected by a hose to a boiler (inside the base) in which steam is built up under high pressure, which is connected to a water tank. Steam generators produce significantly more powerful steam than regular steam irons, and therefore offer the following consumer benefits:

• It cuts your ironing time by half, and is effortless thanks to the powerful steam.
• It is very convenient, since consumers can iron for longer ironing sessions without having to refill the water tank.
• Since the steam is generated by a separate generator, the iron itself is very light and easier to use.

Goal:
The primary goal of this design competition is to help design a truly innovative Steam generator for ‘2015’ with a focus on Philips’ brand promise of “sense and simplicity”.

Peter Alwin wins Electrolux Design Lab 2010 Contest with ‘The Snail’ Portable Induction Heating Concept

Peter Alwin, studying at the National Institute of Design in India, was awarded first place in the 2010 Electrolux Design Lab competition. The Snail, Peter’s micro induction heating concept, beat a field of 1,300 entries and seven other finalists at 100% Design, London 23rd September 2010.

Pater Alwin's snail is in the final list of Electrolux Design Lab 2010 competition

The finalists of 8 include one from India. i.e Peter Alwin creator of Snail- based on micro induction heating.

The Snail is a portable heating and cooking device based on magnetic induction processes. Such is the size and versatility of the Snail, it can be stuck directly on to a pot, a pan, a mug etc. to heat the contents.This reduces the amount of space required for conventional cooking whilst adding portability to the process. Powered by a high density sugar crystal battery, the Snail converts the energy from the sugar, heating up a coil to conduct the magnetic induction process to the utensil. Integrated sensors detect the food type being heated so as to automatically adjust the time and temperature. A simple touch sensitive display with interface helps to monitor the process.

2010 Create the Future Design Contest

The Create the Future Design Contest was launched in 2002 by the publishers of NASA Tech Briefs magazine to help stimulate and reward engineering innovation. The annual event has attracted more than 7,000 product design ideas from engineers, entrepreneurs, and students worldwide. The contest's principal sponsors are COMSOL, PTC, and Tech Briefs Media Group.

Studylite rechargeable desk lamp

India’s eco-friendly rechargeable study lamp, BPL Studylite has won the coveted 2010 international red dot award for product design . It was chosen from 4,252 entries across a field of around 1,635 companies from 57 countries. The awards will be presented in Essen, Germany on July 5, 2010.

Design support provided by Abhijit Bansod of Studio ABD and product co-created with advise from Sankara Nethralaya doctors and students. It was designed to be child-safe, operating at 12 volts, with no heat radiation, flicker free and no harmful ultra-violet and infra-red emission. It is priced at Rs 1690/-

Australian Design awards

Solaqua is a water disinfection unit to be used in rural sub-Saharan Africa. It utilises ultra-violet and infra-red rays from the sun to eliminate pathogens within contaminated water. Raw water is first passed through a sari cloth filter to improve efficiency of solar water disinfection (SODIS). A five tap funnel fills five specially designed bottles to obtain ten litres of water. By spreading and laying the bottles on the ground, the transparent bottle surface allows maximum exposure to UV rays. The black, back surface of each bottle absorbs heat, while reflective inner surfaces reflect UV rays within the water itself.
This is one of the finalist of Australian Design Awards. Design is Mr Jason Lam

Electrolux Design Lab 2009

Electrolux, a global leader in home appliances and appliances for professional use, launches the 7th edition of its global design competition Design Lab. This year Electrolux celebrates its 90-year anniversary with its Design Lab theme: “Designs for the next 90 years”.Undergraduate and graduate industrial design students are invited to compete for prize money and an internship by submitting their innovative home appliance ideas.

This year’s brief is to create thoughtfully-designed home appliances that will shape how people prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes over the next nine decades. The design ideas should address key consumer insights such as being adaptive to time and space, provide learning and allow for individualization.A limited number of finalists will be invited to participate in the final event in London September 24, 2009, to present their entries to a jury of high-level designers and experts.

Entry deadline is May 31, 2009

INDEX:AWARD 2009

The INDEX: award is the world’s largest monetary design award (five prizes each 100,000 euroes) and recognizes design that improves life for people. INDEX: AWARD accepts nominations from all design disciplines, including industrial design, service design, architecture and graphic design. Everybody can nominate designs for INDEX: AWARD 2009 through the online nomination site at www.indexaward.dk. The deadline for submissions is December 8, 2008.

E Bag created by Apor Püspöki, a product design student at Moholy-Nagy University of Arts and Design in Budapest,has a rotating handle attached to a dynamo that charges a storage battery via arm motion. The cooling system uses Peltier technology, that transfers heat from one side of the device to the other side. Cooling status is indicated by three LED lights. The capacity of the bag is approximately three liters. The longer the walk, the cooler the refreshment at the end, thanks to E-bag, a handbag whose cooling system gets its power from being swung back and forth as its owner walks.
Guopeng Liang, a design student at Tongji University in China created I Basket-The see-through iBasket stores dirty clothes and automatically washes them when it fills up.Sung Bae Chang, a design student at Sejong University in South Korea created a portable Toaster Printer. Future Group Business world NID Design Brilliance award 2008

Ticket Design has won the Future Group Business world NID Design Brilliance award 2008 for two of our product designs. The first one is a multiplay product that brings internet, satellite television, education and communication to a TV, a first of kind project launched in March 07 successfully working in Pune, soon to be launched in 20 cities by BSNL. The second one is a industrial programmable logic controller for industrial automation.
