C L E A N O V A T O R S -Outstanding projects from the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme - India

The Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) for SMEs is a global multi-stakeholder partnership that leverages the power of innovation and entrepreneurship to address the world’s most urgent energy, environment and economic challenges. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with support provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) is currently implementing the GCIP in seven countries namely Armenia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey. GCIP India was launched in May 2013 as a partnership between the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), GEF and UNIDO, with the Federtion of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) as main executing partners. The Programme aims at creating an ecosystem of clean technology innovations in the MSME sector to catalyze low carbon industrial growth in the country.
This book is a handy resource for those looking for a bird’s eye view of the breadth and range of clean technology innovations currently being fostered by the GCIP in four crucial areas: energy efficiency, waste-to-energy, renewable energy and water efficiency.

National Clean Energy Fund

The Finance Bill 2010-11 has created a corpus called National Clean Energy Fund, which will invest in entrepreneurial ventures and research in the field of clean energy technologies. The money for this will be garnered through a so-called ‘clean energy cess’ — Rs 50 on every tonne of coal, both domestic and imported. The government didn’t say how much the new cess would bring in, but a back-of-the-envelope calculation by ET indicates that a sum of Rs 2,500 crore may not be unrealistic. How to leverage the fund? take a clue from China- support Indian private business to invest in start-ups in USA and Europe.
China has set aside a whopping $200.8 billion in stimulus funding for cleantech, 79 percent more than the $112.2 billion the U.S.These numbers mean that governments, in essence, have become the biggest cleantech venture capitalists – with China as the largest player by far. Here is an example: vanadium redox flow batteries were being developed in Vancouver, Canada by a company called VRB Power Systems and chinese firm Prudent Energy bought out the struggling company’s assets in Jan. 2009. Later the Chinese firm has raised a $22 million Series C round to build its Beijing manufacturing capacity for vanadium redox flow batteries.

The traditional way of funding Indian public sector units like CEL / BHEL or CSIR labs (CECRI) & IITs to develop clean technologies would take us no where. The starting point is not research but access to patented technology. Will government dare to lend stimuls money to firms to buy out start-up firms from abroad???

Clean-India

Four new graduates of the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business have devised a way of cleaning up the water in Tirupur, India. Ravi Yekula, Baijnath Ramraika, Matt Dixon and Charles Ransler hatched Clean-India, a company aimed at water detoxification used by large textile companies during the dyeing process.Clean-India has created a bioreactor, a device that cultivates the type of algae that feeds on water pollutants, to combat the problem. The bioreactor operates in a closed-loop system, which allows Clean-India to generate its own source of algae to feed on pollutants.

Bioremediation patent for Prof. K.M. Elizabeth

Prof. K.M. Elizabeth of the Department of Microbiology in Gitam University has succeeded in ammonia removal from industrial effluents through a bio-remediation method and has obtained a patent for the method, which will be of use in steel industry in particular. The inventor claims ' the bacterium identified by him can remove 100 per cent ammonia within 24 hours, according to Nessler’s method, and 75 per cent according to the Russian method of Nesselerisation'. This is an indication of quality research work done in lesser known universities.
