U.S.-India S&T Endowment Fund -Third call for proposals

Priority Areas:

Healthy individual: Affordable biomedical devices, diagnostic / preventive / curative measures, or food and nutrition products to improve health. (Drug development and clinical trials are not eligible activities in this category).

Empowering citizens: Reducing the digital/technology divide. This could include amongst others, information and communication technologies with societal impact in areas such as water, agriculture, financial inclusion, and education.

Eligibility:

Proposals must include a minimum of one partner from each country. Bi-national teams applying to the Endowment will work together to commercialize technologies for societal impact.

• The Bi-national teams can include:
  1. i) Start-up companies; or
  2. ii)Incorporated companies; or
  3. iii) Non-incorporated entities; or
  4. iv)Individuals or consortia from academia, government laboratories, non-government R&D institutions
• Each bi-national team must include at the time of application an entrepreneurial (small-scale as opposed to large-scale) entity that will receive a portion of the grant and take the technology to the market. If partners are planning to form a new venture to commercialize the technology, the proposal should include planned incorporation date and the amount of grants requested for the new entity.
• Relationships between the U.S. and Indian partners must be clearly defined, including ownership of intellectual property rights for the technology proposed to be developed and commercialized.
• The proposed technology must have potential towards commercialization within 2-3 years

Grants of up to Rs. 2.50 crores or approximately $450,000 (subject to prevailing exchange rate).Proposals outside this range may be considered under exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the US-India Science & Technology Endowment Board (hereafter referred to as 'Board').

CIIE Present "The Power of Ideas" 2012"

The Economic Times, Department of   Science and  Technology and CIIE have once again partnered to continue   the efforts of  strengthening the Indian start up ecosystem. The  program aspires to identify and support the most innovative idea   and early  stage enterprises and support them through mentoring,   incubation support, cash  awards and seed funding. This year the corpus   of the program has been  increased to a total of INR 6.2 crore with 4   crore marked for seed funding and  INR 2.2 crore to be disbursed as cash  awards.  The program is sector agnostic  and hence wide variety of   start ups (including non tech start ups) can benefit  from it.

Ensuring Safe Transitions from Hospital to Home Challenge

Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)  is challenging software developers to improve care transitions and build upon these tools by generating an intuitive and easy-to-use application to empower patients and caregivers that fits into existing ways that providers communicate. 

The ideal application will:

• Incorporate the content of the CMS Discharge Checklist
• Help patients and caregivers access the information and materials needed to answer the checklist’s questions about their condition, their medications and medical equipment, and their post-discharge plans
• Share this information with doctors, pharmacists, nurses and other professionals in their next care setting.

SANKHYA EMBEDDED SYSTEMS ARCHITECTURE CONTEST 2011

The competition is open to all students doing their PG, PhD or Research Assistants in the following discipline:

• Computer Science

• Students of Physics, Mathematics or Statistics.

CHALLENGE: Design an (original) processor ISA that can solve a problem (kernel code) for a particular application category using either the most compact code or the least number of cycles or both. Grab the chance to architect a processor ISA that may power millions of embedded devices!

PDMA-NATIONAL LEVEL ENGINEERING STUDENTS DESIGN CONTEST: 2011 - 2012.

To encourage creativity and to show-case innovative ideas among under-graduate students in Engineering the PDMA India organizes a national level design contest. The competition is open to all students currently pursuing their B.E/B.Tech. programmes in any branch of engineering and technology in approved engineering institutions in the country. The contest requires the students to conceptualize innovative solutions to any engineering problem of interest to the industries or R&D organizations or those that demonstrate some technological advancement. They should develop such concepts into working prototypes and demonstrate their applications.


Top  3 winners will be reimbursed prototyping costs to the extent of Rs 25,000/-. In addition first one gets Lukas TVS  Innovation award @30,000/- while 2 73 rd gets RMK Engineering College award @20,000/ and @15,000/-

Sahajanand Laser Technology SUSHRUTA Innovation Award (SIA) 2012

The Sahajanand Laser Technology SUSHRUTA Innovation Award (SIA) is a nationwide competition in India  for the most innovative Medical Device Idea / Prototype. The competition is open for groups of students  pursuing degree (Bachelors / Master Level / Ph.D) under Biomedical Engineering, Medical Technology or related subjects from a recognized Indian University / Institution. The project / idea should be related to Medical Devices / Technology. 

The unique feature of the competition is that students need not come out with new ideas, they can build on the prior work done in the institute. 14 teams get 3 months time and grant of Rs 40,000/-  for each team to improve the existing and all invited to participate in an international exhibition on Medical Technology and Equipment.

Lafarge Invention Awards 2011

The Lafarge Invention Awards aim to encourage and reward innovative projects related to

building materials and contributing to sustainable construction. Projects submitted should be

based on an invention less than 5 years old. They should involve a new product, industrial

process, construction method or service and should have reached at least the  prototype 

phase,ideally demonstrated in a real construction project. 

Projects will be judged on:

• their innovative nature
• their viability and economic impact
• their technical feasibility (with an existing prototype),
• and their contribution to sustainable construction.

Project submission will be via an on-line entry form, which will be available from September 1st.

Innovation Tournament 2011

Wipro Technologies and Knowledge@Wharton, have teamed up for the second year to conduct a global “Innovation Tournament“. Inspired by the book Innovation Tournaments by Wharton professors Christian Terwiesch and Karl Ulrich, this tournament will require participants to create solutions by which society can implement green technologies as well as customer-centric work processes. The tournament is open to all individuals and/or groups from around the world who wish to submit a solution for consideration.

The deadline for submissions to the Innovation Tournament is March 7, 2011.

Grand Challenge under Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF)

The Grand Challenge Fund have a two stage application process, a call for expressions of interest (EoI), followed by successful applicants being invited to move to the second stage and submit a full application. EoIs opened at 09:00 on 29 November 2010 and will close at 16:00 on 28 January 2011.

The first round of the Grand Challenge Fund will address challenges in the themes of 'food and water security' and 'the environment'. Preferred themes:

DISCOVER STARS - AN INNOVATION COMPETITION WITH CALIBRATED PROCESSES

Indian Institute of Management, celebrating 50 years of service to nation has taken several new initiatives to support the national innovation eco-system. `Discover STARS’ is one such an initiative implemented in partnership with reputed technical institutes and coordinated by CIIE (Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship) of the institute.

Focus area: ICT sector

The activities spread over several months involve active mentoring of participating student teams by CIIE team and mentors from Mentor Edge. Activity starts with students from invited technical institutes registering by 30th Dec 2010. First stage is IP mapping (January 7 to February 21, 2011), followed by Technology assessment ( May 15 to June 30, 2011), Innovation planning ( August 15 to September 30, 2011) and Scenario writing (October 15 to November 30, 2011)

On successful completion of 4 stages, the participating students would get 4 prestigious certificates from CIIE-IIMA and the best team would get cash award of Rs 2 lakhs.

Best India 2011

BEST-India (Biotechnology Entrepreneurship Student Teams) is aimed at encouraging young postgraduate and doctoral students in developing biotechnology entrepreneurship and exposing them to issues involved in commercialization of bio-science. BEST is sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (www.dbtindia.nic.in), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and is administered by ABLE - India (www.ableindia.org) 

Students have to form a team comprising of 5 team members, identify a team leader and a faculty member/mentor as a Guide. The Guide is optional. Each team will submit a Concept Note based on which a Panel will screen the applications and shortlist 20 teams. These 20 teams will attend a fully paid for high quality Entrepreneurship Workshop that will familiarize them on matters related to starting a business venture like Business Plans, IP & Patenting Strategies, Raising Finance, Business Strategies and HR Practices. At the end of the Workshop, each team will develop a business plan based on their Concept and learning from the Workshop and make a ten minute power point presentation to the Jury. The Jury will evaluate and critique each of the business plans and identify 3 winning teams. The 3 Winning teams will be awarded Prize money of Rs.500, 000/-, Rs. 300,000/- and Rs. 200,000/ respectively. The winning teams will be also be given an opportunity to attend and present their business plans at ABLE’s Annual BioInvest Conference. BioInvest is ABLE’s flagship conference that brings together on one platform Life Science Companies, Institutional Investors and Investment Bankers to explore opportunities for investment.

A few of the many specific examples to be considered include:

•  Novel and innovative ideas that utilize cell phones and payment systems to create incentives for sustainable global health interventions;

•  Novel cell phone-based solutions for high-impact data collections from previously-unreachable or unavailable populations in the developing world;

• Medical diagnostics that uniquely leverage cell-phone and adhere to the ASSURED criteria: Affordable by those at risk, Sensitive, Specific, User-friendly (simple to perform with minimal training), Rapid and Robust, Equipment-free or minimal equipment, and Delivered to those who need it.

Apps for development-competition by World Bank

This competition is run by World Bank- may be first of its kind. Analyst Kit Eaton says the intention behind this is that entrants will craft apps (for any platform from Web-based to smart phone to tablet PCs) that use World Bank data in creative and useful ways, either producing innovative analysis tools or visualizations. Anyone can enter, as a team or alone, and the overall mission is to "reduce global poverty by putting important data into the hands of those who can make a difference in developing countries."

In order to be considered for prizes, submissions must be original software applications solely owned by the entrant(s), which must use at least one of the World Bank datasets found at http://data.worldbank.org. The text descriptions in the contest submission must accurately describe the functionality of the application, and all submitted materials must be in English, or include an English translation.

2010 Cyber International Genius Inventor Fair in Korea (CIGIF 2010)

Korea Invention News is opening and hosting the first ever international invention fair in Korea called: 2010 Cyber International Genius Inventor Fair in Korea (CIGIF 2010). They are inviting invention geniuses and talents from all over the world. 

Indian innovators can submit application online thro Indian Innovators Association, representing India. The participation fees for students are$120/- and for other independent innovators $150/. The Indian Innovators Association is NOT charging any service fee.
