Compendium of 71 emerging Ag-Tech start-ups

 

RICH has curated a Compendium of 71 emerging Ag-Tech start-ups, with the aim of surveying emerging technologies, understanding start-up needs, increasing visibility for start-ups, and to understand support areas required and facilitate collaborative solutions. The compendium was officially launched on the 18th of this month by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India.

TOP 100 INDIAN INNOVATIONS (2024)

 

This is the third publication of the Innovation Yearbook series. The first edition- Top 100 Indian Innovations (2022) provided 100 answers to the question- Is India innovative? And with the next 100 profiled in 2023, the Innovation Yearbook has been accepted as the most authentic reference volume on Indian Innovations. With the current volume, the count goes to 300 Indian innovations. In addition to serving as a refrence book, we hope the innovation yearbook series will be widely distributed in the libraries, to inform & excite the students. Each volume explains technology trends, patent status, innovation merits, and the personal background of each innovator. This type of comprehensive information is not available to seekers in any textbook or social media We received nearly 1000 nominations, directly or indirectly, and thank all innovators & stakeholders for helping us in this task. A hundred innovations are selected from out-of-the-sourced documents. For selection, equal weight is given to ‘innovator profile’ and ‘innovation merit’.

To supplement information received along with recommendations/ nominations, additional details are collected from publicly available documents on the net. Photos of inventors/ founders are taken from their LinkedIn profiles which are also cited in select cases. The photo on the cover page is provided by Zen Technologies.

Patent strategy:Global innovators of Indian origin and Resident Indian Innovators

Indian Government has taken several policy measures to boost patenting by resident Indians including faculty researchers, scientists working in public funded research institutes and independent innovators. The results are encouraging and lays the ground for next level of journey. CRISIS TRIGGERED INNOVATIONS FROM INDIA

Beginning of COVID 19, expectations are rampant on India resorting to compulsory license to protect its large population from virus carnage. Also price controls on drugs and medical devices seemed to work against Indian patients getting proper healthcare based on new technologies. But what happened was different- it seems COVID crisis spurred Indian innovators into action mode with flood of innovations emanating from India. What factors worked as enablers? Is it sustainable? Has India finally discovered mantra for innovation!

During the COVID crisis, the flood of innovations from Face masks to testing has 5 enablers.

• Standards, WTO & ICMR,

• Testing and validation at DRDO and other places,

• Local demand, especially public procurement,

• Freedom to Operate from Patent perspective,

• Capability to come with creative imitations, catch up products in a speedy manner.

We expect innovations to flourish in New Normal where the 5 enablers exist,” he says.

Highlights from the report.

• The volume of patents public funded institute hover around 1000 whereas from corporate sector it is 3 times higher.
• Major focus of govt funded research was on medicinal preparation with focus on traditional herbal medicine. A number of patents were also filed in organic chemistry related to acrylic compounds.
• corporate sector also patented  on medicinal preparation though  focus was on preparation of organic active ingredients and preparation of ointments.

It can only be said that India is far behind China in patenting. 

CII Industrial Innovation Awards 2015

With the primary objective of boosting innovation culture within industry and inducing a healthy competition among firms to achieve innovation excellence, CII has launched its flagship “CII Industrial Innovation Awards” in 2014 which received an overwhelming response from all sections of the industry and was a grand success. Post its grand success last year, CII has introduced this award as an annual recognition for industry to adjudged companies as innovation driven. The award envisages to recognize and reward the best in Indian firms at different levels (large, medium, small) and categories (manufacturing, service) and in the process encourage others to strive for the honor. In 2015 along with existing award categories, CII has introduce a new award segment to provide recognition to the top Indian Start-ups each year.

Internet Of Things (IOT) in Aquaculture- Eruvaka Technologies

Water quality maintenance is the crucial component to achieve a healthy aqua-farming environment. Its main purpose is to control the following parameters, i.e., water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity, turbidity, ammonia nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), etc.-, the parameters that strongly correlated to the incubation environment of aquaculture.
Eruvaka Technologies, Vijayawada successfully developed and implemented system for aquaculture management using IOT topography based on patented system.

Indian Innovator Sampath kumar seeks donation on Kickstarter for a research project in Mississippi state university aimed at improving water condition in lakes.

Nualgi is a patented nano-scale nutrient formula in the size range of 5-100 nanometers. At this scale, elements react differently with each other, remain suspended longer, disperse easily across the water column, and are therefore “bio-available” to marine organisms.The liquid additive contains 12 essential nutrients in a nano silica base that acts as a nutrient and a carrier. These nutrients are specifically chosen to stimulate diatom growth in the water column.

Diatoms (micro algae) produce 30-50% of food in aquatic ecosystems.

They release O2 and consume CO2, dramatically increasing dissolved oxygen levels. This helps aerobic bacteria break down organic matter (pollution) and Diatoms also happen to be the favorite food for Zooplankton. In turn Zooplankton are the primary food for fish, crustaceans, and other organisms. 
By boosting Diatoms, Nualgi empowers the natural food chain at the source!
The product and process was invented by Sampath Kumar in India and supported under TePP.

Now Nulgi America is planning to carry out experiments in Mississippi state university to review Nualgi’s safety and effectiveness at reducing water pollution to improve water conditions in a commercial aquaculture setting.

Chanchall Dass is finalist in World Oil Award 2014 in the Innovative Thinker Category.

World Oil Awards every year celebrates innovations in Energy Industry and this year 2014 innovator Chanchall Das was shortlisted as finalist in the `Innovative Thinker Award'. 
Das was strong believer in life time learning, acquired engg graduation degree from Institution of engineers followed by masters in Operations from NIT, Duragpur and MBA from IGNOU. While working at ONGC, he developed a new method  for  Multiple Zone Oil and Gas Production Technology for simultaneous production of oil and gas from multiple reservoir through single well without any crossflow. ONGC gave him permission to patent and commercially exploit the technology.He began his entrepreneurial journey by incubating his startup Das oilfield Technologies at NDBI.
