NASSCOM Social Innovation Honours 2012

The awards aim to showcase projects that demonstrate best practices in using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for social transformation. Organizations/ Departments of Government / Individuals/ Students applying for the NASSCOM Social Innovation Honours should satisfy the following basic criteria:

• They should be registered Indian entities, or foreign entities with a registered presence in India. The innovation must benefit India, or a community in India
• The organization should be in existence in India for a minimum of one year
• The Project / Initiative should have been in existence at least for one year
• Students can apply as a concept or an idea

Innovation led Development- special issue from MIT

A special edition of Innovations, a quarterly journal published by MIT Press, has been written specifically for Tech4Society event held at Hyderabad and is full of in-depth insights on social entrepreneurship and technology from leaders in the field. Contents include lead essays by President Paul Kagame of the Republic of Rwanda, Julia Novy-Hildelsy, Executive Director of The Lemelson Foundation, Matthew Bishop and Michael Green, and case studies, discussions and analytic essays by Ashoka-Lemelson Fellows and other experts in the field of innovation and social entrepreneurship.

MAD-Make A Difference wins Staples Youth Social Entrepreneuship competition

MAD, NGO, started by Jithin Nedumala won this Ashoka Change Maker competition. They teach children living in orphanages and street shelters. Currently they are 300 active volunteers. Better story to read than financial uphevels crowding paper headlines.

The Right Livelihood award 2008

Krishnammal Jagannathan and Sankaralingam Jagannathan are two lifelong activists for social justice, and for sustainable human development, working with those who are at the lowest rung of the social ladder. They have carried the Gandhian legacy into the 21st century, never ceasing to serve the needs of Dalits, landless and those threatened by the greed of landlords and multinational corporations.They received The Right Livelihood Award for 2008.

Model educational institute for tribal children

Achutananda Samanta, born in a poor family raised to an institutional builder with KIIT and an agent of change with KISS. KIIT started with ITI , now offers engineering, medicine and a host of other advanced programs in Bhubaneswar. KISS is different from the popular trajectory of private educational institutes, it provides free residential education to about 5000 tribal children.

Indian team consisting of all the players from KISS, Bhubaneswar won Under-14 Rugby World championship by defeating South Africa in the final match held at London in Sept 2007. To quote the tribal boy` people made fun of us when we wore shorts, now in London, we wear suit'. Empowerment of people by people.

The Social Innovation Exchange (SIX) website now is online. It will enable members to upload information about their organisation; share projects, case studies and articles with the network; and engage in forums and discussions about social innovation around the world.Take a look .
